The Woodwind Instrument

bassoon.gif

My Philosophy

The Bassoon is a wonderful, rich toned woodwind instrument from the Oboe family. However, it is one octave lower than the Oboe. It is difficult to learn at first, seeing the instrument (with 28 keys at the least) is said to be the most difficult instrument around. Nonetheless, it can get you to college, with its scarcity of players. I have been playing the described instrument for 3 years now, and still find it challenging. And definitely, I always will.

Want to play the Bassoon?

First ask your school's band director if you can try out the reed to blow on. If your embrasure is correct for the reed, you are already on your way to greatness. Now take several things into consideration.

(1)     Do I have the time and patience to get good at the hardest instrument in the band?

(2)     Can I afford 7 to 14 dollar reeds every month, along with private lessons?

(3)     Do I have long enough fingers to wrap around the Bassoon?

(4)     Will I stick with it?

(5)     Will I invest in a good, professional Bassoon in a few years if I plan to go to college on it?

Playing the Bassoon well can easily get you a scholarship, but you might also need to buy a personal Bassoon for yourself if you take this track.

Short Description and Works

The Bassoon Reed

The Bassoon reed is the most important part of the bassoon. It is made of bamboo cane and has two sides, instead of the common one side setup used by most other woodwinds. The two sides allow the reed to vibrate and produce sound when blown into. Its really that simple, no weird mouth positions are necessary. (Only a few)
